Competing
is not compulsary for members of Warrington Kickboxing,
( no member is ever presssured to fight - which
unfortunately happens at a lot of other clubs
).
The majority of our members train at the Wolf
Gym specifically for the Fitness & Self-defence
applications of Kickboxing.
However, for those who do wish to test their skills
and receive Medals or Trophies and maybe even
win Championship Titles, Warrington
Kickboxing has a very successfull "CHAMPIONS
PROGRAM" that can help you to achieve
this goal.
Starting out as an Amateur ( wearing safety equipment
), then progressing through the ranks to become
a Professional ( without safety equipment ) Warrington
Kickboxers compete under Japanese Kickboxing (
K-1 Rules ) or Thai-Kickboxing
( Muay-Thai Rules
) depending on the format used by a promotion.

How the journey begins : Club Level.
Members
start off with Club level Sparring. This is Free-Sparring
in the Ring or in the Octagon with another member
of the same Club, either during a Class or during
a 'Dual' ( 2 Person ) Personal-Training session.
Eventually, once a member has their basic blocking
/ defence skills to an
adequate level, they can then progress from Club
level Sparring to
'Inter-Club' level Sparring.

Inter-Club Sparring-Days :
Warrington Kickboxing firmly
believes in giving its members the best preparation
it can when it comes to competing, and as a member
of our Martial Arts Academy you will have access
to regular Inter-Club Sparring-Days.
This is where you Free-Spar with someone from
another club, ( Inter-Club
means between-clubs
).
At an Inter-Club Sparring-Day,
bouts are 'Non-Decision' meaning there is No Winner
and No Loser.
Bouts are strictly 'Controlled-Contact' Sparring
with an emphasis on Speed and Technique.
Sparring Days help you gain competition experience
in a controlled environment, as you will need
to do a Weigh in when you arrive for your bout
and you will also have a Coach warming you up
in the changing area prior to entering the ring.
During your bout a Coach will give you cornering
advice and there is a small crowd watching you,
( friends & families often attend to give
their support ).
There is also a Referee to control the contact
level and to make sure that the rules are adhered
to.
Bouts are filmed and then you can review later
with your Coach and get advice on any mistakes
that you made or techniques that you need to improve.
Inter-Club bouts are a great way to improve your
skills, especially when combined with regular
Belt Grading examinations.
Most people thoroughly enjoy their first Inter-Club
bout and go
on to do many more Sparring-Days on a regular
basis.
The Wolf-Gym holds Inter-Club
Sparring-Days six times a year, in January,
March, May, July, September and November.
Inter-Club
Sparring bouts are 3 rounds of 60 seconds.
__________________________
'K1-Light'
: Scored-Sparring
Once a member is confident with their 'Inter-Club'
Sparring, they can progress on to 'Scored-Sparring'.
Scored-Sparring is also known as 'K1-Light'.
Scored-Sparring bouts have Winners and Losers.
Emphasis is on out-scoring your opponent using
Speed & Technique. All bouts are Controlled-Contact.
There is quite an element of fitness required
for K1-Light contests,
and members often step up their training in the
4 weeks prior to competing via a training camp
which entails 3 x a week Kickboxing and 3 x a
week running. The Wolf-Gym gives discounted training
to those members training 3 x a week.
There are opportunities to win Championship title
belts under the K1-Light
format.
K1-Light
contests are 3 rounds of 90 seconds.
__________________________
'K1-Rules' : Full-Contact
Members progress from Controlled-Contact 'K1-Light'
bouts to Full-Contact Amateur fights known as
'K1-Rules'.
During bouts under 'K1-Rules'
a fighter can win a contest by KO
or TKO as well as
by Out-Pointing their opponent should the fight
last the distance.

Progression
: Of an Amateur Fighter.
Club Sparring : During regular class or during
a Dual-PT Session.

The Wolf-Gym has had members compete in literally
hundereds of Amateur bouts over the last thirty
years, with many winning Championship titles.
Two of our members succesfully progressed all
the way through the rankings to become Amateur
World Champions.
Warrington Kickboxer, Chris
Heath captured the Amateur World Lightweight
Title when he defeated the defending Champion
Hakan Yildiz of Turkey.
Yildiz was one of the most experienced
Amateur fighters on the International circuit
at the time, with an outstanding record of 86
contests with 83
wins,
including many bouts in Thailand! This was an
incredible win for Chris
Heath!
Warrington Kickboxer, Graham
Sayer actually won
'Two' Amateur World Titles.
His first was a World title at Middleweight. Graham
defeated Ibrahim
Bulduk, for this title. Bulduk
was an outstanding Amateur with a record of 46
bouts to his name, and at the time had
recently been the winner of the PRINCE'S
CUP in Thailand, a prestigious Amateur
tournament held under Muay-Thai Rules in Bangkok
to honour the King of Thailand.
Graham went on to
succesfully defend his Amateur World Middleweight
title a total of five times
before moving up a division and capturing the
I.K.F. Amateur World Super-Middleweight title.
Graham's many outstanding achievements
even saw him win the 2005 Warrington Sports Personality
of the Year award (
Warrington
Guardian ).

Just
from reading over some of the results that Warrington
Kickboxers have achieved in the Amateur code,
you will clearly see why we are so highly regarded,
not
only having one World Champion but two!
Professional Bouts:
Professional Kickboxing
is a very tough combat-sport and only very few
members ever progress onto this high level.
Usually it is for those members who have progressed
through the Amateur Circuit, and having confidentally
won several Amateur Championship title belts,
are seeking further challenges.
For
those that do compete in the Professional code,
the rewards can be high. Professional fighters
get paid to compete and there can be opportunities
to fight abroad.
The best professionals in the World today compete
the Kickboxing promotion known as 'GLORY',
which pays its Champions winning purses of over
$100'000.00 ( One
Hundred Thousand Dollars! ).
